ALLIANCE SOFTBALL

 

General Information

OVERVIEW


Overview: Alliance softball is an opportunity for WYSI players to face stronger competition in a semi-competitive environment and to prepare for competitive tournament play. Our teams participate in Indy Alliance Softball, which is a collection of all-star and travel softball teams in Central Indiana who play doubleheaders on Sunday afternoons in the fall and spring. Opponents are typically within a 30-45 minute drive of Westfield; most are located in neighboring communities or around the 465 belt (e.g., Beach Grove, Carmel, Franklin Township, HSE/Fishers, Mt. Vernon, New Palestine, Noblesville, Plainfield, and Zionsville). This division of our softball program is especially designed for girls who play multiple sports and/or who desire to play at an all-star level for more than just the summer.

Ages: 10U, 12U, 14U (based on player age on December 31st of the current tryout year).

Prerequisites/Eligibility: Players should have previously played at an all-star, alliance, or travel level. They must 1) register for evaluations and 2) register to play in either the fall or spring rec/in-house softball season in order to be eligible.

Fall Season (~16 games): Girls will play on one of our Westfield teams in the Noblesville Fall League (August 14-October 2). Doubleheaders are played on Saturdays at the fields behind Noblesville High School; practices are held weekly at the fields behind Monon Elementary School. There is a league tournament at the end of the season. You will need to register online through Noblesville Softball by July 18 (late registration extends through July 25, which coincides with travel/alliance tryouts). Cost is $65 and includes a numbered shirt (all paid to Noblesville Softball - NOT WYSI). There will also be opportunities to participate in Indy Alliance Softball and potentially one fall tournament based on player availability.

Spring Season (~20 games): Girls will play doubleheaders through Indy Alliance Softball and up to three tournaments. We will attempt to end the season at the end of June, but may need to extend into July based on summer tournament schedules and player availability.

Evaluations/Selection: Alliance and travel softball evaluations will be jointly held on July 25 (10U: 1:30-3:00 pm | 12U: 3:00 - 4:30 pm 14U:  4:30 - 6:00 pm). The evaluation process includes skills, drills, and possibly scrimmage games (players of the same age group go through evaluations together). Members of the WYSI Softball Board and coaches help conduct the evaluations and select players for each team based on the combination of evaluations, end of season evaluations, and recommendations by all-star and travel coaches. Additional factors in player selection include ability, availability, attitude, and team needs. NOTE: In the event of an opening on the team, players may be invited to practices or winter workouts to ensure there is a mutual fit.

Player/Parent Expectations: Players attend practices/games to learn and execute the fundamental skills of hitting, throwing, catching, base running, situational softball, and all other aspects of the game. All players can expect to play a variety of positions, hit in the batting lineup, and play the majority of each game in doubleheaders. Coaches use those games to determine the best batting order conducive to scoring runs, the best defensive alignment according to positional skills, and when to have players pitch or play other positions according to ability. The program shares a “rec philosophy” for doubleheaders in order to develop well-rounded players; players are given multiple opportunities in games to further develop fielding, hitting, and pitching skills. Our objectives are for girls to have fun, improve skills, and continue playing WYSI softball. NOTE: Players may opt in or out of the program after the fall season. 

Financial: Parents pay a one-time $50 WYSI fee (covers insurance and facility use) once the player is selected to the team. The fall and spring costs should be $250-300 total, which covers costs for jerseys, equipment, tournament registrations, and umpire fees. An optional $50 winter fee covers indoor facility use, equipment, and hitting/pitching clinics January-March.

Registration:
All players must register to attend tryouts.  Click on the Registration link at the top of the page or log-in to your WYSI account and click on the "Register" link.  There is no fee to register.  Registrations must be submitted no later than 48 hours before the tryout date.
