Overview

The Westfield Rocks travel team provides an opportunity to Westfield players to compete at the highest level of youth baseball competition. The Westfield Rocks proudly represent the Westfield community. The program is founded upon providing the best baseball instruction available while exposing the players to high levels of competition. It also provides parents and out coaching staffs an opportunity to teach values to the players and many life-long lessons including teamwork, friendship, respect, practice, dedication, and sportsmanship. All players must reside in the Westfield-Washington school district.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although not specifically prohibited, players are strongly discouraged from playing travel baseball and another sport simultaneously during the season (March-July). *Contact the travel baseball commissioner with all other questions.

What is Westfield Rocks Travel Baseball?
The Westfield Rocks travel team provides an opportunity to Westfield players to compete at the highest level of youth baseball competition. The Westfield Rocks proudly represent the Westfield community. The program is founded upon providing the best baseball instruction available while exposing the players to high levels of competition. It also provides parents and out coaching staffs an opportunity to teach values to the players and many life-long lessons including teamwork, friendship, respect, practice, dedication, and sportsmanship. All players must reside in the Westfield-Washington school district.

At what ages are Westfield Rocks offered?
Westfield Rocks has a team at the following ages: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15

What is the age cut off?
The age cut-off date is May 1st. For example, if your child is 9 on May 1st he is eligible to play on the 9-year-old team. Each player will be required to tryout within the given age guidelines and the only standing exception to this rule is based on grade of the player.  Should the player be in a class with the age ahead, he/she will be allowed to “play up”. All other exceptions will be reviewed by the baseball board and decisions made in line with the best interest of the program philosophy.

How are teams established?
At the end of July WYSI will host an open evaluation for all age groups.  Parents are welcome to view the tryout, however will be prohibited from contact with the players during the tryout period. Evaluators will be selected from a group that the WYSI Sports Director, Travel Commissioner and Varsity Head Coach believe possess the best ability to judge baseball talent. Last year’s coach CANNOT evaluate the kids in their prospective age group. They will be in attendance leading that age group from station to station, but they are not scoring kids in any way.  Once scores are tabulated the Gold Coach will be selected or retained.  If the coach of any team is a parent, their child must evaluate high enough to qualify to play on that team.  The Gold team will be selected first.  Once the Gold team is fully established, the Green Coach will be selected or retained (The board will decide if there is enough talent at each age group to warrant two teams).  The Green Coach will then select their team from the remaining players who evaluated.

How many games do the travel teams play?
Each teams’ schedule will vary. During the season the 7U and 9U teams will play approx. 35 games. The 10U team plays 45-55 games per year and the 11U & 12U teams play 50-60 games per year.

How much does it cost to play travel baseball?
The total cost for participation (before fundraising) ranges from $800.00 - $900.00.

Typical Fee Structure:
WYSI Fee - $75-115 (Due upon acceptance of team roster spot)
  Team Fees -
  Winter workouts - $150-200
  Uniforms - $175
Tournament/Game Fee - $400-500 (Variable by team, # of games and travel)

*Sponsorships and Fundraisers will typically reduce the total cost by  25-50% depending on the efforts of each team.

If your team decides to travel further or play in a week-long out of town tournaments such as Cooperstown, Myrtle Beach or Pigeon Forge the base cost could increase, again depending on fundraising and sponsors.

How far do teams travel?

Each team’s schedule will vary. The teams travel locally with most games being played in the Indianapolis suburban area. Teams may decide to participate in out of state tournament. Home games are played at the Shamrock Springs Baseball Complex or Grand Park. WYSI strongly encourages 7U, 8U, 9U, 10U and 11U to remain somewhat local in an effort to keep the costs down and avoid “week-long” tournaments..

How long is the season?
Each team sets their own schedule. Typically, a team will begin practices once a week in December/January and begin practicing twice a week in early/mid-March. The season usually ends sometime in July. Some travel teams will have optional practices and a fall ball league from September – November (this is not mandatory and will be up to each coach).

How much playing time will a player get?
In travel baseball, playing time for each player will depend on a number of variables including but not limited to: attitude, ability, performance at practice and games, and hustle. There is no guaranteed playing time or batting order. The Head Coach and/or assistant Coach(es) make the final decisions.

They will be in attendance leading that age group from station to station and may be asked to assist at a station but they are not scoring kids in any way.
