Softball (Travel & Alliance) - 2020-21

The Westfield Rocks travel program provides an opportunity for Westfield players to compete at a higher level of youth softball competition as compared to the in-house program.  The Westfield Rocks proudly represent the Westfield community. The program is founded upon providing the best softball instruction available while exposing the players to high levels of competition. It also provides parents and coaching staffs an opportunity to teach values to the players and many life-long lessons including teamwork, friendship, respect, practice, dedication, and sportsmanship.

There are two levels of teams offered - Travel and Alliance. Visit the WYSI Travel & Alliance Softball page to review the specifics on each level

We understand that players at the 12u and 14u level may also play softball for the Middle School team and the coaches of the travel teams will set expectations at the beginning of the season for those players.  During the other times of the year (Sept. - March) it is encouraged that the player participate in other sports and activities.

ALLIANCE TEAMS
General Overview:
Alliance (or Showcase) softball is an opportunity for players in Westfield to face stronger competition in a semi-competitive environment to prepare for competitive tournament play. Our 10U, 12U, and 14U teams participate in Indy Alliance Softball, which is a collection of all-star and travel softball teams in Central Indiana who play doubleheaders on Sunday afternoons. In order to play at high levels, the teams play 10 games in September and practice biweekly indoors in January-March (hitting and pitching clinics). The teams then play Sunday doubleheader games in April and May and tournaments in the summer (at least 20 total games for the spring/summer season). Opponents are typically within a 45 minute drive of Westfield; most are located in neighboring communities or around the 465 belt (e.g., Beach Grove, Carmel, Franklin Township, Greenfield, Lapel, Mt. Vernon, New Palestine, Noblesville, Plainfield, and Zionsville). The Alliance program is especially designed for girls who play other sports in the fall and winter (we encourage playing multiple sports), but we request players make every effort to attend team activities when there are no conflicts.

Ages
  - 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U (based on age of player on December 31, 2020)

Tryouts/Evaluations
  - Yes.  Tryouts will be held on August 2 to select the teams for the 2020-21 season. (more details in the "Tryouts" box the right side of this page). The evaluation process includes skills, drills, and possibly scrimmage games (players of the same age group go through evaluations together). The Manager helps select players for each team based on the combination of evaluations, end of season evaluations, and recommendations by all-star, alliance, and travel coaches. Additional factors in player selection include ability, availability, attitude, and team needs. In the event of an opening on the team, players may be invited to practices or winter workouts to ensure there is a mutual fit.

Practices
- Practices will begin in late August. There will be one practice per week in the fall, spring and summer. Once or twice (optional) per month in the winter as access to facilities allows.

Cost - Our goal is to keep the fees as low as possible. A $125 fall fee will be collected once the player is selected to the team, which covers costs for a practice shirt, equipment, insurance, facility fees, and umpire fees. The spring fee is $225 and includes jerseys, equipment, facility fees, tournament registrations, and umpire fees. An optional $25 winter fee covers biweekly hitting and pitching clinics.

Player Expectations:  Players attend practices and games to learn and execute the fundamental skills of hitting, throwing, catching, base running, situational softball, and all other aspects of the game. All players can expect to play a variety of positions in Sunday doubleheaders with a minimum of 2 innings (6 outs) in the field and at least one at bat as the minimum requirements for each game. Our objectives are for girls to have fun, improve skills, and continue playing WYSI softball. NOTE: Players can opt out of the program after the fall season. We don’t want to see girls lose the desire to play softball if it isn’t the “right fit” for them.

Parent Expectations: While the program shares more of a rec philosophy for Sunday doubleheaders to develop well rounded players, playing time is ultimately determined by the Manager. He/She will determine the best batting order conducive to scoring runs, the best defensive alignment according to positional skills, and when to have players pitch or play other positions according to ability.

Teams/Managers: Each age group (10U, 12U, and 14U) will have one or two teams if enough players desire to participate (and enough Managers to lead teams). If there are enough players in an age group to field two teams of 12, then 24 players may participate from each age group. Each Alliance team will have one Manager. The Manager, once assigned to a team, will then select their assistant coach(es).
