Travel Softball

Sport Overview

The Westfield Rocks travel team provides an opportunity to Westfield players to compete at the highest level of youth softball competition. The Westfield Rocks proudly represent the Westfield community. The program is founded upon providing the best softball instruction available while exposing the players to high levels of competition. It also provides parents and coaching staffs an opportunity to teach values to the players and many life-long lessons including teamwork, friendship, respect, practice, dedication, and sportsmanship. All players are expected to reside in the Westfield-Washington school district.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages are players eligible for Westfield Travel Softball?
Westfield has teams at the following age levels: 10U, 12U, 14U, and 16U

What is the age cut off?
The age cut-off date is December 31st. For example, on December 31st 2016 if you daughter is 10 years of or younger she is eligible to play on the 10U team.

How many games do the travel teams play?
Each team’s schedule will vary. The major difference in the number of games between rec and travel is that rec teams play single games, and the travel teams play double headers and tournaments. During the season most teams will play 30-45 games. 14U will most likely play fewer games as school ball will come into play.

How long is the season?
It is an 11 month commitment. Practices typically begin in September with potential scrimmages in the fall. Indoor practices are held from November to March. April through July consists of games and tournaments. Most teams take time off over Memorial Day and the 4th of July.

We have an annual family vacation over the summer. Does this mean a player shouldn’t try out?
We ask that players are fully committed to the team while “in season”. With that, exceptions can be made. Let the coach know in the offseason of vacation plans so tournaments can be fielded.

How much does it cost to play travel softball?
This will vary depending on fundraising and sponsorships; the historical cost has ranged from $500 - $800 per player for the season.

If a travel player pulls out of the program mid-season will a refund be provided?
Unfortunately, there are no refunds. The majority of the fees are for equipment, uniforms, league andtournament dues, as well as pitching and hitting clinics which are all upfront costs.

How far do teams travel?
Each team’s schedule will vary. The teams typically travel locally around the state. Most games are less than 2 hours away from Westfield.

How much playing time will a player get?
In travel softball, playing time for each player will depend on a number of variables including but not limited to: attitude, ability, performance at practice and games, and hustle. There is no guaranteed playing time or batting order. The Head Coach and/or assistant coach(es) make final decisions.

Can a travel softball player participate in other sports throughout the year?
Yes, and it is encouraged in the offseason, September – March. The player is expected to be fully committed to the travel softball team from April through July. We understand that players at the 12U and 14U level may also play softball for the middle school team, and the coaches of the travel teams will set expectations at the beginning of the season for those players.
