WYSI Volleyball is aimed at teaching the fundamentals of volleyball in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. There is no
experience necessary to play, only a willingness to learn, listen, and have fun!
3rd-4th grade rec league – This league is designed for beginners and it is usually the first time that the child is
introduced to formal volleyball play. They will learn the basic rules of the game, as well as the proper way to pass
and hit the ball. Most of the serving is done underhand, but toward the end, the coaches may start to teach some of
the girls the mechanics of overhand serving.
5th-6th grade rec league – This league is still ideal for beginners of appropriate age, but there will be others on
the team with a little more experience. Many of the girls will learn to serve overhand during this league, but
overhand serving is not a requirement. They will master the rules as well as hone their skills to prepare themselves
for tryouts of the 7th grade school team.
7th -9th grade rec league – This is the most competitive league, as the girls are starting to get of height to be
good hitters. Beginners have also been successful in this league, as playing with the more experienced players
usually helps their game to come along. Full volleyball rules are enforced, such as carries, net violations, foot
faults, etc., just as they would be in high school. If your daughter is planning to tryout for the 7th or the 8th
grade school volleyball team, she should also sign up for this league. If she in fact does make the school team,
your signup fee will be fully refunded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What days of the week are practices and what is the locations?
A. Last year, there were 30 teams of 8-10 girls each, so there are a lot of practice locations and times. Practices are once a week sometime between Monday and Thursday, in one of the elementary schools in Westfield. They can start as early as 6:15 or as late as 7:30. If there is one particular day that your daughter can not practice, please list in the comments section at registration.
Q. When are the games?
A. The games are on Saturday, at varied times between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, usually at one location such as Westfield Intermediate School.
Q. Can I request a certain coach, or to be on a team with my neighbor for carpool purposes, etc.
A. No, per the WYSI Policies and Procedures (Section 7.C.6.b). With the number of girls that we place on teams, we try to focus on distributing skill above all else. Usually there will be someone from your team randomly that can help with carpool if needed, after all, Westfield is not that big.
Q. What kind of experience is needed to coach?
A. None, really. Especially with the younger kids. The commissioner is available to help with some drills, practice ideas, etc., that will make you successful.
