Green Wave - WYSI Cross Country Club

Cross Country

Sport Overview

Westfield Green Wave Cross Country is heading into our 5th season starting in late August. The Green Wave (WYSI Cross Country) is a running club for Westfield boys and girls in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Our focus will be providing a fun opportunity for athletes to learn the basics of the sport of Cross Country. The new home of the Green Wave will be at Monon Trail Elementary School.

Registration will open in May and includes a team uniform. Registration will close in late July before the mandatory Parent meeting. Date and location of the parent meeting will be announced in July. At the meeting we will introduce our coaches, go over the schedule for the season, and discuss safety and rules. Athletes should be dressed to run as we will also hold our first practice after the coaches have been introduced. Practice will last until about 7:30pm. Please be sure to grab a copy of the fridge schedule and verify your emergency contact information before leaving the meeting. Also, visit the Volunteer sign-up table to learn more about opportunities to help the club. This year we will be using to coordinate our volunteers.

Our practice schedule this year will be Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6pm until 7:15pm. In October practices will be shortened and will end at 7pm due to earlier sunset. November practices will start around 5:00pm. Practices will include a brief team meeting, stretching, running activity, strength and conditioning, and a game. Final practices will be held during the week leading up to our last meet of the season. We will host a time trial, three club meets for Westfield athletes only and the 2nd annual Westfield Fall Kick Off Classic. Entry fees for meets hosted by the Green Wave are included in the registration fee for the season.

Green Wave Cross Country is a member of the IYTA Conference. Our club will compete at meets with conference mates Body in Training, Fishers Fire, and Northside Saints. IYTA meets are optional and entry fees ($5) are not included in the registration. Please see the schedule for IYTA meet dates. Last year as a team we won the Freedom Trail Classic and the Midwest Championships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When and where is the parent meeting?
A. Parents meeting for Cross Country is scheduled for 9:00am on Saturday, August 25 in the Monon Trail Elementary Gym. Athletes should come dressed out to practice. They will join us for the first 15 minutes of the meeting to go over rules and expectations before heading out to practice.

Q. How do we order a uniform?
A. When you registered your child you included shorts/jersey size for their uniform. You may go to LogoShop (directions) during regular business hours for a fitting if you want to confirm sizing.

Q. My child is involved in another activity and cannot make every practice, is that okay?
A. Practices are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Attendance is not mandatory for all practices but we do recommend attending as many as possible. As with any activity, improvement comes through practice.

Q. Can my child be grouped with his/her friend?
A. All athletes practice at the same time and location. For car pools this will make it easy to schedule drop off and pick up even if kids are in different groups. Groupings at practices varies by activity. On Monday we have pace groups which are small groups of athletes with similar ability levels. Wednesday and Thursday are usually divided up by age group 8 & Under, 9/10, and 11 & Up. Age group is determined by your child's age on December 31 of the current year.
